Oropharyngeal cancer, OC
- Incidence trend: Accounts for 1.3% of all cancer types and 4.2% of head and neck malignancies.
- Cure rate: Low overall cure rate standing at only 30%-40%, proneness to metastasis and expansion, and rapid progress.
- Predisposing factors: Tobacco and alcohol consumption, HPV infection, etc.


Disease characteristics
Oropharyngeal cancer is a type of malignant tumor that occurs on soft palate, palatine tonsils, base of the tongue, around the epiglottis, or on pharyngeal wall. It predominantly occurs in men aged 50-70. Common screening methods include imaging, cytology of exfoliated cells and biopsy, with biopsy being the method for definite diagnosis.
